Love your reno! I had a knotty pine kitchen as a child. Your space looks timeless! And thank you for selecting something other than stainless appliances. Between the fingerprints on the frig and greasy mess along the burners…yuck!
I think a man invented that finish! Great job on your kitchen! Thanks, Debra! I was thrilled when we found this collection. I, too, have the knotty pine paneling through out the kitchen, dining room and family room.
Any change done to the kitchen will have an impact on the rest of the rooms. My husband insists that we keep the knotty pine in the family room and dining area. I have no idea how to change this kitchen and keep the knotty pine in our open floor plan.
The counters are yellow tile squares. The backsplash is the yellow tile. Do you have any ideas that would help keep the balance of this room?
To pull down the knotty pine is not in the budget. Neither is painting over it; the space is massive and hubby is not on board with the idea of paint. Hi Laurie! I just redid my knotted pine kitchen, too. My GOD what a project!! I used the same primer and it worked great. Only needed one coat of paint. I used Polar Sky gray valspar on the walls and Stormy Night valspar for the cabinets.
I put marble countertops in and a reclaimed wood pallet backsplash using a whitewash of the same colors. Looks fantastic! The appliances need to be updated—I love the black retro theme!! Fantastic update, had I had seen the white on the pine I would have gone with that instead. Especially when I saw Wisconsin!

The skinny white lines take away from the overall nicer look. I'm afraid the only suggestion I have for your cabinetry is to paint as well. You could go a dark cream or white or do two different colours - green on top, grey on the bottom or blue and grey, white and any colour. If you chose to go white please choose a white that is as close to your sink and appliance white as possible.
You could have some fun in here with colour. Both these kitchens have painted cabinets - the back-splash and the countertop in the blue kitchen was all done with paint, a good quick fix until they can get to remodeling.

The pine is clear finished, and our floors are oak. It all seems to come together. I like the concrete floor idea- just don't use a heavy dark granite on the counter tops. Metallic high temp paint to make hood stainless color and a wrap to make pit vertical with a clean tiled face, rip out bar, throw in new clean wood flooring that's wider plank - at least a 4" reveal on the face - paint entire walls or blue board and plaster them and then paint The plan is to replace the appliances with some stainless steel : but if we're keeping cabinets- I need to get a smaller refrigerator for that space, if we're replacing cabinets I can get a larger refrigerator.
The function of the cabinets is OK. There is NO trash place in entire kitchen or trash receptical in cabinets - I am hoping to try a really small trashcan with slideout bin in one of the lower cabinets - after I get my husband to sawsall the interior shelf.
Not ideal but workable. The cabinets are dark, without the soft close or hidden hinges. The poly is very thick on the cabinets and even with BINZ and 3 coats of paint in 2 months I am seeing dings.
Maybe I should start with lights, and see if thats an improvement, then decide on wood flooring- but have to be committed to this floor plan even if I replace- and then replace the stove, and see how it goes from there And maybe if it all looks good go for granite currently corian speckle. How do you think this wood flooring is going to look with the knotty pine? What to do with Knotty Pine Q.
Could you fit new countertops and sink into the budget? If you keep the cabinets, what about a black countertop A white farmhouse sink, new taps and appliances, updated light fixture? If you want to spend a bit more, maybe a simple white subway backsplash, remove cabinet over stove and tile to the ceiling, chimney vent hood with a country feel.
If you can tile yourself it would be pretty reasonable. The photo shows a more modern range hood, but there are countryish ones available. Mary Garges Original Author. Thank you for the pictures Mary. I'm terrible at the vision part! The front part of the house has very tall baseboards that I'm thinking of continuing into the den. A different crown molding is also on the to do list. Thank you for the link Paul!

I'd paint the kitchen ceiling with this paint and also the pine area that is on top of cabinets. I'd have window with no curtain and some cute, colorful pottery on the shelves flanking the window. Refacing could be an option depending on your budget. This means you can keep the cabinets but change the doors and paint the pine area above the cabinets. Darzy 8 years ago. The pickled wash looks like a great idea. Also, invest in canned lights, undercabinet light and task and a great light for above the sink. Celebrate it's uniqueness! I would sand and pickle wash. I think that's just lovely and would contrast well with the floor.
I would set the curtain rod higher into the cornice area and buy red and white checked curtains or blue and cream toile curtains.
