Last week, Hodgson reportedly took measures to reassure Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson that Ferdinand would be watched after on international duty. The Sun reported that Hodgson was actively trying to "placate" Ferguson. In his remarks following Ferdinand's withdrawal, Hodgson said the decision had to do with Ferdinand's "detailed, pre-planned training programme.
After two years away from the squad, it's fair to wonder what damage Ferdinand might be doing to his international chances by pulling out of the team this week. Last week's call-up could be interpreted as a metaphorical olive branch from Hodgson to Ferdinand; now, the United defender has pulled out on his own.
On the one hand, it could mean nothing. But it's unlikely that Ferdinand's training program will be any less detailed next summer. Then again, it's also unlikely that Hodgson, considering their bumpy history, will select a year-old Ferdinand if others are available. Ferdinand's England career might not be done after all, but neither does this feel like the dawn of a long-running second act.
Follow MikeCummings This is a complete outrage! How dare they bring back a complete disgrace to England. The FA are a bunch of clowns, failed to punish a cowardly attack on Torres! We need to stand up to this and refuse to watch the national team. Who wants to watch an animal sarcastically clap referees? If he continues his shameful behaviour at the national stage, England will look like a 3rd world country! I thought it was strange that the FA didn't follow up on Rio's assault on Torres.
Now I see why. Roy is going backwards when he should be looking forwards, shame 'cos I thought he had made an Ok start to his role. Comment posted by andy, at 14 Mar andy. Comment posted by Bursaspor16, at 14 Mar Bursaspor On merit Rio definitely deserves his call up. But logic tells you we don't need him. Surely even the average players available will be good enough for these two fixtures.
Come next summer the only Rio will be the one England fly to, Ferdinand will be left behind. For the record, I am a Man Utd fan. How predictable, Rio gets recalled to the England squad after two incidents in as many games Personally I hope he gets injured. Comment posted by Franky, at 14 Mar Franky.
And for one moment I thought Roy was a top bloke - oh well so much for that. Comment posted by trueblue, at 14 Mar trueblue. Is Hodgson the team manager, or one of the old farts sat on the FA board. Now showing his true colours and has bottled it and taken this team backwards.
Rio won't be around for the world cup so why not bring someone up from the U 21's. Leaving that aside, the decision to bring Ferdinand back when he is well past his best shows just how questionable Roy Hodgson's selection policy is.
Should have been included for Euro Roy, but now you should be looking forward. Comment posted by Tanglewood, at 14 Mar Tanglewood. Likewise others in the squad whose clubs are still in contention for trophies, CL qualification, fighting relegation, etc.
Comment posted by Weallfollowunited, at 14 Mar Weallfollowunited. Anyone who has seen United recently would have seen Rio playing really well. How ever will we keep the free-scoring San Marino at bay now?! Comment posted by Maxtor, at 18 Mar Maxtor.
Fergie is right.. Suarez's fault. Comment posted by Stuart, at 18 Mar Stuart. Why has Ferdinand made such an issue about England when it is clear his strict training plan will prevent him playing.
How thick is this guy? Comment posted by Perton66, at 18 Mar Perton He can't want to play for England that much. The schedule will never suit him or Fergy so he may as well call it quits now and save Roy the hassle. Comment posted by chezza, at 18 Mar chezza That is it now Ferdinand I hope the door is now closed on your England career. Always prefered Les anyway. Comment posted by U, at 18 Mar U I like how he kept complaining when he wasn't picked for the squad yet now he gets called up he withdraws due to medical programme I think it's right to call up younger players to give more experience at this level, just wish more teams had English players coming through ranks than buying abroad to help our national game.

Fed up with hearing how he should recall Ferdinand, he has given him the rope with which to hang himself and sat back and watched it happen. The issue has now been put to bed and Roy can focus on the qualifiers ahead and the Rio in Brazil not the one in Manchester.
Nothing personal against Ferdinand, he served England very well for many years. As I predicted on this site last week. How can he say that he wants to continue to play for England when his medical situation is only likely to deteriorate? If he isn't capable of playing regularly now, he is hardly likely to be able to do so at the age of 35 or He should do the sensible thing for everyone, himself, club and country, and announce his international retirement forthwith.
Another of the current breed of players that see England as no more than an opportunity to further enhance the value of their image rights.
